Frankenstein had a white label album “Live From New York Remix Album” back in 97′. Some of his remixes for artists (unofficial remixes) are so dope that cats should have been checkin’ for his production skills back then instead of messing with some of the crap that was out there.

I’m not sure what it is about Frank’s sound that is so appealing to me, but he definitely has a “sound” to his beats that are very compelling to me. I first heard him on a Salt Lake City hip hop radio show when they played “The Rain Is Gone” back in 98′. Immediately I was fiendin’ for this track. Luckily enough I had the tape deck recording that night and that tape became a prized possession.

This is a great EP. Georgia is seriously multi-talented and she has such an evident amount of self-confidence that comes through in her music. It would have been very easy for Georgia to get pigeon-holed as an R&B singer by some wack A&R, but enter Stones Throw to give her the green light she so deserves. This EP is different than anything I've heard in a while and Georgia made the beats and sang on every track.

Vivian Green is old-school R&B: she can actually sing, and her songs actually say something. It's not just over-produced bump-n-grind nonsense that so many other female performers these days excel at. She's a vocalist, not just some MTV/BET video hoe upgraded to singer.

This album consists of songs that are atypical of R&B these days also. They don't depend on driving choruses, or thumping bass. They just depend on her voice, and the words she's singing. And they WORK. Instead of giving us an album consisting of a few singles and some filler, we get a solid block of material that holds up and doesn't become old or faded. Long after you stop playing your current album-of-the-minute with the big hits on it that get inevitably replaced by bigger hits on another day, you can keep right on playing this one.

My one complaint (and the reason it's four stars and not five) is that the album isn't as good as her first one. That one really consisted of songs that fit her voice perfectly and had much stronger, more poignant writing overall. It was more soulful than this one, and emotionally heavier. This one is excellent, but it's very light compared to her debut.

And hey, there's nothing wrong with that. She's obviously able to stretch and be flexible. And if that means that every album she puts out will maintain her high quality and yet be different from the last, that's really exciting. Not many artists can make that kind of promise, but when Vivian does, you can trust her, and trust in her music. This CD is definitely a keeper.

Wouldn't it be great to be famous, throw a party, and invite all your favorite musicians to perform for you and your friends? Dave Chapelle thinks so, too, so he threw just such a party in the summer of 2005--in the Clinton Hill neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY--and invited not only his friends but a whole bunch of people he didn't know. A self-professed hip-hop head, Chapelle asked some of the finest and most respected artists in the game--including the Roots, Black Star, Jill Scott, and Common--to provide the music for his little soiree.

There's very little thug or hardcore posturing present on any of these tracks (or in the film version of the Party directed by Michel Gondry). Instead, the hip-hop here is socially conscious, groove-oriented, and reflective of the old-school virtues of the hip-hop community. Jill Scott and Erykah Badu bring a taste of sharp-edged R&B to the proceedings, while Talib Kweli, Common, Mos Def, and Dead Prez keep the raps fluid and consistent throughout this dynamic, good-times throwback of a set.

While most artists out there portray an illusionary image from street thugs to dealing drugs, Shogunna paints a real picture of what he is and what he lives. Being caught up in the street life at a young age, all the surrounding experiences have befallen on Shogunna like a trial of tests. Gangs, guns, fights, jails, and a lifestyle of dangerous activity can push you to your limits. But you don’t go that route and expect to have it easy. In the end, it’s what you make out of it that defines your character. For Shogunna, picking up the pieces and trying to transform a painful past to a prospered future, is what defines him as a new person being reborn through redemption.

Scarface take us back to the fifth ward and also returns to rap a lot on his latest release MADE. Made is the usual formula that has made scarface a classic artist. 10 solid songs accompanied by an intro and outro. Scarface is the best when he is telling a gritty story in his rhymes, expressing his love for his religion, and just some downright gangster lyrics. Along with some solid beats this album is a winner. Scarface has been around since 86' so his consistency in making music is amazing. This album gets big support from me and is highly recommended.

Carnage is a so-so release from Chaundon. I think the braggadocios rhymes are cool, but they'd probably sound better coming from someone more believable. It's not a bad album, but there was nothing on it that "wowed" me. I'd have to say it doesn't separate Chaundon from the rest of the pack either. You might love it right away, but after the new album buzz wears off, I can't imagine anyone reaching for this. I'd recommend giving this a listen before you actually pay for it.

The first thing that jumps out about this album is the fact that Supastition finally has production that will do his unique flow justice. Supa takes his listeners on a journey through everyday life with lyrics that are heartfelt and earnest. Whether he's asking his ex-girlfriend to take him back or recounting his journey to get signed you'll feel like you're standing right there with him through it all. With help from beatsmiths like Illmind, Nicolay, Jake One, Madwreck, and M-Phazes, the production has more meat for Supa to sink his teeth into this time around. Sometimes, every now and then a artist or a group will come out and their release is hyped up and then you get the CD and its mediocre or nothing that you expected it to be. Lucy Pearl, which is composed of, Raphael Saadiq, from Tony!Toni!Tone!fame, Dawn Robinson, from En Vogue fame, and Ali Shaheed Muhammad, from A Tribe Called Quest fame. Now if that's not a supergroup, then let me know what is. The debut CD from Lucy Pearl lives up to all expectations and then some. The music appeal is comparable to what a 2000 Tony!Toni!Tone! CD might have been. With Raphael Saadiq and Ali Shaheed Muhammad sharing most of the production duties, you'll be bouncing like "Check The Rhime", "Electric Relaxation" and "Award Tour" had you bouncing in A Tribe Called Quest's heyday. Most of the tracks on Lucy Pearl's CD are dance tracks, but that doesn't hurt anything. Raphael's and Dawn's vocals blend like they have been together in the same group for years. The best example of this, is the 1st single, that was also on the "Love And Basketball" soundtrack, "Dance Tonight". There are other gems as well: "Trippin'", "Can't Stand Your Mother", "Good Love", "La La", etc. The year 2000 has already had a few tight R&B CDs so far: D'Angelo, Amel Larrieux, Joe, Carl Thomas, Dwayne Wiggins, as well as, Ms. Braxton herself, but the vibe that Lucy Pearl has created will be hard to stop for many years to come. I haven't seen a combination this good since chicken and mambo sauce.

Between the Sheets is a 1983 album released by The Isley Brothers on their T-Neck imprint. Yielding the top ten singles, "Between the Sheets" and "Choosey Lover" including the radio hits "Let's Make Love Tonight" and "Ballad for the Fallen Soldier", the album gave the Isleys another platinum record. It was a series of lasts for the group: it was the last album to be released under the T-Neck name, the last album the group recorded for Epic, and the last time the 3 + 3 lineup recorded together. By the end of the year, younger brothers Ernie, Marvin and Chris Jasper left the group to form Isley-Jasper-Isley while Ronald, O'Kelly and Rudolph continued on as a trio. Go For Your Guns is a 1977 album released by The Isley Brothers on their T-Neck imprint. The album yielded three charted R&B singles including their #1 political funk anthem, "The Pride", the Top 40 pop record, "Livin' in the Life" and their Top 50 ballad, "Voyage to Atlantis", which became one of the Isleys' most beloved songs in their later years as well as the radio track, "Footsteps in the Dark", which instrumental was sampled by Ice Cube for his 1992 hit, "It Was a Good Day". After scoring their first number one album, The Heat Is On, The Isley Brothers' followed that classic up less than a year later with 1976's amazing Harvest For The World. The band has always had something to say and never have they said more than on the amazing title track. A call for understanding and unity, the song has more relevance today than it did twenty-five years ago. The album is worth it for that song alone, but the rest of the album stands up as well with "People Of Today", "Let Me Down Easy" and "At Your Best (You Are Love)" standing out. The album peaked at number nine on the charts.

Meet the nu-soul--same as the old soul? Well, Dwele's debut certainly contains similarities to old-school artists such as Donny Hathaway and of course Stevie Wonder--all the evidence you need to connect the dots is here in the shimmering Fender Rhodes piano that predominates on SUBJECT.

But Dwele is made of more contemporary stuff. He's a rapper who's found his singing voice, though the only time his hip-hop roots really show is in the tumbling lyrics to the coming-of-age song "Twuneanunda" and the title track. Mostly he's a smoothly sophisticated singer with a canny sense of what works in an arrangement, and while he obviously has deep ties to what is now ancient R&B history, his sound is undeniably modern, and irresistibly seductive. Most of the cuts on SUBJECT are down-tempo, though the incidence of satin sheet-oriented boudoir ballads is kept to a surprising minimum. He's a more thoughtful lyricist than that, as evidenced by the nuanced, humorous "Lady at Mahogany," about a tryst gone awry, in which he shows he's not averse to telling tales on himself. SUBJECT is both light enough in feel and accomplished enough in execution to leave you hungry for more.

This is one of the more musical hip hop albums out there; production by the legendary Jay Dee makes this an awesome aural experience. Throughout almost every song, there is a tasty groove, making this something you'll want to listen to all the way through. But the rhymes failed to inspire me. First off, there is nothing new here content wise, the same old egotistical BS, money, objectifying women, the whole standard regiment of material. Being a hip hop fan, I can look past this and consider other things, like rhythm, flow, all that stuff. Slum Village failed me on this as well. None of the members are particularly standout rappers, which really hurts the album. Still, the beats are SO good that Fantastic Vol. II is still worth picking up despite this rather major shortcoming. I mean, these beats are extremely good, some of the best I've ever heard in hip hop. To hear the combination of ultra sweet beats and quality rapping, make sure to get Common - "Like Water For Chocolate." Best rap album ever, no question.

There seems to be a little bit of overcrowding in the R&B realm lately. With all these artists and more coming on the scene, everybody is trying to fight for that consumer dollar that ultimately determines the longevity of their musical careers. Whether you are a long-time veteran or the newest discovery, the bottom line is album sales for the most part. Nobody wishes this was the case, but that's the harsh reality of living in a capitalist society. Whether it's movies, music, sitcoms, or novelists, there is a certain level of success that you must maintain to keep the higher-ups happy. Dwele must have mustered enough buzz and sales from his first major release Subject in 2003 that Virgin gave him another go with his latest album Some Kinda.
You'll find a perfect blend of soul, jazz, funk, and blues on Some Kinda, a change that probably comes with most follow-up albums by artists trying to find their sound. Dwele dives right into the melting pot of genres with the song "Holla," a cut that's smooth enough to be played in those ultra swank lounges that us 'Grown And Sexy' people like to frequent. "A Pimp's Dream" is rich in jazz, with horns resonating ever so eloquently and Dwele lacing some of his own bravado in the lyrics. "Know Your Name" and "Lay It Down" are probably two songs that most would say sound a lot like music from his Subject disc, but they're certified bangers regardless of what album they're on. "My Lova/Movement," "Weekend Love," and the title track "Some Kinda" are all good examples of standard Dwele songs.

The first single "I Think I Love You" is probably the only song that would somewhat fit with today's urban radio market, sounding a lot like something Musiq Soulchild would do. The melodic yet humorous "Flapjacks" and the heartfelt "Old Lovas" are both decent album tracks, but nothing you'd probably ever hear on the airwaves. Besides a few guest appearances by Slum Village on the mid-tempo groove "Keep On" and jazz musician Boney James on the intimate song "Wake The Baby," Dwele makes the rounds by himself on this album. Most artists would probably solicit the help of anyone and everyone for some kind of mainstream buzz to make sure their album is a commercial success. Dwele goes against the norm prevalently found in the music industry, basically relying on his words, his vision, and his talents. This is very admirable considering that a lot of artists don't have those qualities or just simply push them to the side when it comes to trying to climb the charts. Hopefully everyone will have Some Kinda love for Dwele and pick up yet another one of his exceptional ensembles.

They may not be household names in the UK, but in Europe thousands have heard of Danish Hip Hop group Outlandish. Making award-winning music since 1997, the handsome posse is made up of Waqas Ali Qadri, Isam Bachiri and Lenny Martinez. Having already produced two genre-defining albums in Outland's Official and Bread and Barrels Of Water, the trio continue on their journey of 'life music' with their third. An inspirational collection of 15 songs, it's a prime example of how music can be both entertaining and meaningful.

Born in Denmark but hailing from Moroccan, Pakistani and Honduran backgrounds (Isam and Waqas are Muslims and Lenny is Catholic), religion and politics have an important influence on Outlandish. Themes about Islam and contemporary issues facing young Muslims in the west are often included in their music. Take for example, Look Into My Eyes, which is based on a poem by a teenage Palestinian that expresses the plight of those suffering from America's foreign policy. The song flows without sounding preachy. Similarly, tracks such as Just Me and Una Palabra give a rare insight into life in today's Europe as seen through the eyes of a second generation immigrant. Nothing Left To Do boldly tackles the taboo issue of a young Muslim man catching HIV.

Another key theme is love and respect between men and women, highlighted on Any Given Time and Calling U. Both modern love songs, their seductive lyrics and melodies are enhanced by Isam's velvet vocals. Soft and sensously sung, it's easy to see why Outlandish's lead singer is so popular.

While most American hip hop outfits may rap about gangs, guns and girls, these brothers prefer to be morally-minded with their lyrics. Flitting comfortably between English, Danish, Spanish, Urdu and Punjabi, songs like Komigen also allow Waqas and Lenny to show off their multilingual skills. I've Seen, featuring popular British Muslim musician Sami Yusuf deomonstrates another feather in Outlandish's bow – their interest in collaborating with other Islamic artists.

Proving that music can be open-minded and overtly religious, with Closer Than Veins Outlandish have created a cross-cultural gem.

After getting hold of the Little Brother albums, Murs's 3:16, and the Buckshot and 9th Wonder album, i really fell in love with 9THs skills. This album is now my favorite out of the lot, and all of them are superb...

The reason this 1 sits at the top of my pedi stool is Kaze. This guy can spit fire, yet keep his lyrical content inspirational and spiritual. His word play and flow can be stunning at times. Put this together with some of the best beats and sampling 9th has come out with, and you have an album worthy of any hip hop library. From the heartfilled and soulful "Should've Been Here", to the base filled, head knocking "Stay a Customer", Kaze and 9th pump liquid ear candy that would get any true hip hop lover wet.

After truly despising the MTV money grown M.C's like 50 on heavy radio and T.V rotation, it truly keeps my faith in Hip Hop when finding diamonds in the rough like this. Who said Hip Hop is getting old.....

If you never have liked hip-hop for any other reason than it's usual mainstream nastiness then this is a reason to become interested and follow hip-hop. Ivan Ives' Iconoclast is by far one of the best albums I have ever heard in my entire life. I would most definetly place it in the top 5. Ives has an ability to not only create vivid real lyrical pictures but is also able to stand alone in the world of hip-hop because of the eccentric yet attractive and sophisticated auditory beats that are performed in his work. What also makes this man so attractive is the aspect of his roots that he is obviously very close with as revealed by his work. In my opinion foreign rap is some of the best rap out there and if you can successfully rap in Russian and English you're it.

Hailing from London, Canada; Shadrach Kabango is one of those artists that you just can't really understand why he's been flying under everyone's radar for so long. Really, there aren't too many artists bringing this caliber of quality in 2007. This simply fulfills those holes that a lot of underground rap has in it. Comparatively, Shad stems from the vein of the Native Tongues and other like-minded collectives. Notably, the album contains stellar production, infectious hooks, solid structure, and quality choruses. Above all, Shad brings highly introspective lyrics with an unmatched consciousness and sheer wit that sets him apart from his peers. His philosophy on life, and hip-hop are consistently alluring, and never fails to entertain with a great sense of humor. "The Old Prince" is the complete package - definitely a modern day masterpiece.

My Soul is a diary of all the experiences Maria Jensen went through with love over a decade and was one of 2003's best R&B albums. What I love most about this record is that no two songs sound exactly alike; each track has something different to offer. Though it's tough to get into - it took me three or four spins before I really liked it - it's definitely a great album, one that you'll notice something different about with each listen. There's nothing particularly remarkable about My Soul, since Maria isn't an amazingly talented vocalist, but the emotion, intimacy, and depth behind it really sets it apart from most other R&B efforts out there. Soulshock, Karlin, and Biker all did a great job with the production; it's contemporary and urban, yet soulful enough to get each song's message across. My Soul is definitely an album worth giving a try, and Maria is an artist who definitely deserves more airplay.

There’s really not a disappointment on this album in terms of lyrics, beats or flow. One Be Lo came correct with “The R.E.B.I.R.T.H.” – an album that just flows from track to track and can play over and over again. You’d be crazy not to pick up a copy. Actually, pick up a couple.
