With the release of BoA in March of 2009, Boa Kwon hit the shores of the United States. Using her stage name, BoA (Beat of Angel) uncorked her brand of standard pop and dance music for American audiences.

While the 22-year-old may have been popular for achieving popularity at such an early age, there’s little to BoA that hasn’t been seen or heard before in the pop world. Her sound is well-produced and cleanly manufactured, as though the songs were pieced together in a lab somewhere before being committed to CD.
The release of a “deluxe” version of BoA provides more opportunities to explore Boa Kwon’s American debut with the “soft comfort” of a couple of bonus tracks and the radio edit of the decidedly languid “Energetic.”
With production from Sean Garrett, Brian Kennedy and Bloodshy & Avant, BoA doesn’t stand out from the crowd in any way, shape or form. It’s dreary vocoder stuff written by a team of writers and performed by an inexpressive, plain vocalist. Nothing particularly stands out, apart from studio sheen, and BoA certainly doesn’t prove herself to be a performer to take note of with this U.S. debut.
The effects-filled “I Did It For Love” features the aforementioned Sean Garrett and pulses with an irritating stab at a club vibe and one of the most egregious uses of Auto-Tune I’ve heard on a pop record. It simply zaps any and all importance from the track, leaving a shell of a song that could have been performed by any subpar pop singer.

C.A.S.H. (Cass Always Stays Hard) is the prototypical example of a “mixtape rapper” casting a wider net and meeting with mixed results. While not untalented, Cassidy’s skill is suited for what amounts to a niche market in this day and age. His flow is calculated and everything feels carefully constructed, sometimes overly so. Little spontaneity or irreverence is allowed to creep in. That has a detrimental affect on the entire set, as so many songs are geared toward the dance floor.

C.A.S.H ultimately proves inconsequential. Nothing here inspires anything in the way of a passionate response. Cassidy has not lost a step as a lyricist, but he seems to be lacking in the way of inspiration. His lethargy brings the party down considerably, sucking the life from what might have been an otherwise enjoyable album.

I think Joe Budden has dropped a potential top ten album of the year here. I am not sure because I would have to look back at what has been released, but this is a very cohesive album with solid production and amazing rapping. Another great thing about this release is that the sound quality is good to great. if you have been a fan of Joe Budden for awhile you may have been used to sloppily mixed and mastered releases, not this time!

I suggest everyone at least gives this a spin or two, it is really refreshing to hear a rapper be so forthright and personal. Joey is one of the best at projecting that emotion through his voice, and that is what makes Mood Muzik 4 a definite must listen.

After amassing only 4 verses over the CunninLynguists’ last four releases, the Atlanta-based artist is set to step out from behind the boards on Death Is Silent, both producing the entirety of the record and handling the majority of the vocals. The record’s concept involves the inevitability of death and its impact on love, life, family and friends. The artwork was realized by Argentinian visual artist Diego Fernandez.

Kno will still see plenty of activity on the production side of things, as the next 6 months will see the release of Oneirology, CunninLynguists’ newest studio album in 3 years, Chico and The Man, the long-awaited concept album with fellow QN5 Music artist and longtime friend Tonedeff as well as MacheteVision, a joint project with emcee Marq Spekt.

C of Tranquility has a ’90s feel to it with beats are devised of murky, subdued sounds and choruses often composed of the trademark DJ scratches and riotous choruses. “Scratch” brings a heavy laden beat with a wild out chorus whilst the explosive “Golden Terra of Rap,” produced by DJ Premier, brilliantly complements Canibus’ ravage rap style.
Not just content on bringing words together, Canibus’ explores the choices of life on “Good and Evil” and “Cingularity” calls for the return of quality to MCing in the current period.
The album offers a consistent offering of vintage rap which, for the most part, delivers on all fronts. Although some tracks seem like filler to pad out the 14-deep tracklist, Canibus’ tenth offering overall contains sharp verses and dope head nodding beats which stay well away from the new sounds of today’s Hip Hop.
But more than just a tribute to the ’90s, C of Tranquility highlights the great strengths of one of rap music’s greatest enigmas and again poses the question of why the title of number one was never achieved.

As much as i hate uploading this album, knowing it will be taken down in a few days time, but i felt track 8 with damian justified its purpose here. Get it fast before it disappears.

Bruno Mars literally sprung up out of nowhere this year when he appeared on B.O.B.'s hit single Nothin On You. He had an undeniably smooth voice with a unique quality that made him instantly likable. I will admit that Bruno Mars does show flashes of Michael Jackson in his voice in the same type of way that Ne-Yo has some shades of MJ in his voice. This is not to say he sings or sounds like Michael, just that certain notes he hits reminds of the late great. However that little quality did not cause me to overrate this album. Bruno Mars is extremely talented and is a star waiting to happen.

Right from the get-go, Tony Hussle's debut album, Sexy Freaky Electric, has a jarring juxtaposition: the obligatory intro track featuring his mother explaining that Hussle has been playing keyboards since his emergence into the world; shortly thereafter, Hussle utters to his sexual partner in "Come Again" to "Roll over, baby/because I ain't done." From there Hussle dips into the neo-soul jar of cookies D'Angelo had been munching on for a 25-minute introduction to the world and his brand of smooth, seductive, minimal R&B grooves. Topic-wise, Hussle presents nothing new, but stylistically he's all over the map paying homage to his forefathers: the ghosts of Marvin Gaye are easily summoned on "In This House," Memphis soul and Al Green on "Wait," and one of the best Prince imitations this decade on "Your Girl." All in all, not a bad debut, but if he really focuses his direction and expands his vocabulary a bit, Hussle could be a serious force to reckon with in the years to come

Cassidy begins his album with "The Problem vs The Hustla", he takes on two personalities and battles himself, in what is a unique track and a good way to start the album. Cassidy then rips up "I'm a Hustla" sampling Jay-Z vocals (Dirt Off Your Shoulder) love this cut. Next up are two impressive street banger's "On The Grind" and "Crack". The single "B-Boy Stance" follows, more of a club track that I am not really feeling. Cassidy gets back to his hustling with "A.M. to P.M.", lines like "Hop out the bronco and O.J. him" are memorable. The album's first guest appearances come from Nas and Quan who hook up with Cassidy for the smooth "Can't Fade Me", Quan provides a first class chorus, and all three rhyme well. Cassidy then switches things up dropping five tracks for/about the ladies and partying. While there not bad, they don't grab my attention, seen this formula to many times before. Things pick up when Cassidy collabs with two more of Rap's relatively young guns Lil Wayne & Fabolous on "Six Minutes of Death". Cassidy then takes some time aside and enlists Dr. Daniel for "The Message", a track about the challenges of being black, racial and Hip-Hop profiling, incarceration, segregation, and the million man march- Cass and Dr. Daniel kick some knowledge on the albums most conscious track. Mary J Blige is an R & B legend, and the remix to "I'm a Hustla" is off the hook, Blige's singing and chorus enhance an already great track. Cassidy provides an entertaining release with "I'm a Hustla", a must have for his fans and an album I recommend checking out.

A year ago, conductor Jason Weinberger heard Suite for Ma Dukes for the first time. A long time fan of J. Dilla, Weinberger’s first thought when he heard the music was that he needed to find a way to perform Miguel Atwood-Ferugon’s “stunning reinventions of Dilla’s music.” ”I’m always looking for ways to open up the traditional orchestra experience to new things anyway, so this seemed very natural.”
After a quick Google search, Jason found Miguel and sent him a message to see if there was anyway to get the Dilla pieces in front of one of the orchestras he worked with. A few months later they met in LA and connected over Dilla, Flying Lotus, and Lutoslawski, and the rest is history.
Earlier this year, Miguel Atwood-Ferugon and the Mochilla Team flew out to Cedar Falls, Iowa to witness J. Dilla’s music being performed as part of the WCFSO’s (Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra) tribute to Great American Composers. The evening had Dilla’s music performed alongside legends Duke Ellington and William Grant Still.
“As the person responsible for programming the concert, I probably don’t have to explain how exciting it was for me to find myself performing Dilla’s music with the WCFSO. Even more gratifying, though, were other aspects of the evening – feeling the connections emerge between Dilla and his predecessors William Grant Still and Duke Ellington, taking the orchestra outside of its comfort level and in process to a whole other level of music making, and especially offering our audience the opportunity to abandon preconceptions and discover something special. In the words of one listener in attendance that night, ‘the music was beyond interesting, especially the movements from Suite for Ma Dukes by J. You dont have to pay tribute to this legend only on his anniversary (10th Feb) every year, to me he should be celebrated anytime one wishes to do so, by sharing his music so more people who are confused will get to know better who he is and he has crafted. R.I.P. J DIlla, your beats will always be bumpin in my head with that crazy drumline in 'Raw Addict', that is what you have others will never do, being different, sampling a 4 bar loop which sounded no way close to what 'the red' is now, i could go on with your older stuff, but i would stop here and hopefully all this blog post and music i have shared will make you realise what a great impact Dilla Dawg has been on Hip Hop, nuff said. I've heard that the best CD Bobby has put out is a toss-up between Heart of Mine and Stuck on You. I don't own the latter, but I can definitely testify that there isn't a bad song on Heart of Mine. (This record must be one of his best because 6 of the 10 songs on here are on his Anthology Pt. 2 compilation). Fair warning, though: this is entirely romantic music. 7 of the 10 songs are ballads (the other 3 are somewhat upbeat). Bobby is known for romantic/heartache subject matter, but NOBODY does it better.

On this recording, Bobby uses top-knotch studio musicians such as guitarist Michael Landau (Richard Marx, Chicago) and saxophonist Dave Koz. Bobby performs all of the keyboards himself (so the liner notes say). He also does all of his own harmonies, and I have to say, nothing sounds sweeter. Bobby has a wonderful tenor voice and his harmonies are blissful perfection. Just take a listen to "Stay With Me," "Next Time I Fall," or "Heart of Mine." I personally think that I like Bobby's version of "Next Time I Fall" more than Peter Cetera's/Amy Grant's. His voice reminds me of Chicago's Jason Scheff, with whom he shares a songwriting credit on "Heart of Mine." What a splendid coincidence. (Bobby Caldwell co-wrote two 80s benchmark songs for Chicago featuring Scheff's lead vocal: "Niagara Falls" and "What Kind of Man Would I Be?").

Caldwell was involved in writing all of these songs either collaboratively or solely. The production is very sweet, more poppy than jazzy. Many music afficionados refer to this genre as "smooth jazz/R&B." Whatever it is, it's addictive. The jazziest tune you'll get on this is probably "First Time," which features a jazzy guitar solo performed by Bobby. Genre aside, Bobby Caldwell's lyrics and chord progressions are food for the soul (or the heart, if you prefer). Bobby's biggest hit is a song that he co-wrote with guitarist Alfons Kettner and is covered by at least a dozen artists: "What You Won't Do for Love." The guy should get more recognition than he does as one of the all-time best songwriters.

When I heard "Jamaica", the first single off of this album, I immediately ran out and purchased a copy of "Carry On". Much to my surprise the whole album possessed the R&B-Jazz fusion sound I was listening to at the time. Caldwell's vocals also weave in and out of his stylish Latin and Reggae laiden tunes complimenting there perfection. The imagery of his lyricism is captivating on "Jamaica" and even more thought provoking on "Catwalk". I am glad to see that this release is now available on CD. It was slightly ahead of it's genre then and it is essential to the audiophile who collects recordings that mark a transition in R&b musics style and progression.

Contemporary jazz singer/guitarist Bobby Caldwell was born August 15, 1951, in Manhattan, NY; his parents, Bob and Carolyn, were the hosts of the television variety show Suppertime and exposed the child to a wide variety of musical influences. Caldwell began studying piano and guitar at age 12; he initially pursued a career in rock & roll but was equally adept at playing jazz and R&B and at 17 took his band on the road to play the Las Vegas circuit. From there the group moved on to Los Angeles, but despite recording an album titled Kathmandu, Caldwell enjoyed little success and eventually returned to his parents home in Miami. There he began work on his 1978 breakthrough album What You Won't Do for Love, scoring a hit single with the title cut. Efforts including a 1979 self-titled LP, The Cat in the Hat, and Carry On followed, and although Caldwell enjoyed a strong following at home, he became a superstar in Japan. He shifted creative gears with 1996's Blue Condition, a collection of big band-era standards; the similarly themed Come Rain or Come Shine followed three years later.

Tuomo Prättälä (born April 30, 1979, in Helsinki) is a Finnish jazz and soul musician perhaps best known for his contributions to such bands as Quintessence, Q-Continuum, Huba, the Emma Salokoski Ensemble, MP4, and the Ilmiliekki Quartet. Tuomo started playing piano at the age of seven and continued his interest through his studies at the Finnish pop and jazz conservatory. He has composed, arranged, and produced music for the aforementioned bands, as well as performed as a singer and a keyboard player. His singing style has been greatly influenced by Prince, and his other musical influences include Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, and Marvin Gaye. Between 2002-2007 he appeared in various roles on over a dozen CDs. During that time he also won two international jazz competitions and was nominated for four Jazz-Emma Awards (the Finnish equivalent of a Grammy) along with other music awards. In January 2007 his first solo album, My Thing, was released by Texicalli Records to great critical and popular success. The Finnish Jazz Society and Sony Finland awarded him the 2007 Sony Jazz Award two months after the release of the CD.

Luther Vandross had so many hits throughout the 1980s and '90s, and--more importantly--was such an influential R&B stylist, that any attempt to sum him up on a single-disc compilation is somewhat futile. Still, 2006's ULTIMATE LUTHER VANDROSS, which modified the track list of the 2001 collection of the same name, does an admirable job of capturing the artist's achievement.

There is an undeniable vibe around an artist destined for stardom that speaks to you before they utter a single word. Sitting across from Jovan Dais you can feel the creative energy in the room; it pulls you in and keeps you riveted on this young man whose personality seems to fluctuate from the smooth charm of a ladies man to the street swagger of a bad boy. Grounded in the classical sounds of rhythm and blues with an updated twist, the musical talent of Jovan Dais and his artistic confidence are what set him apart. The 6-foot, charismatic singer, personifies class, style and creativity which is expressed in his self-penned lyrics, and displayed in his approachable image.

Jovanâs story is every bit as multifaceted as what he brings to the table artistically. Born in the Bronx and raised in Atlanta, Jovanâs childhood memories are split between a mother who loved R&B and introduced him to music by playing artists like Marvin Gaye, Blue Magic, Harold Melvin and Blue Notes around the house and a father who would moonlight as a deejay and managed various musical acts (such as the popular 90âs Latin group Barrio Boyzz). Jovanâs father exposed his talented son to his business early on by taking him around innovators in the business including industry legends Dallas Austin and Maurice Star. His fatherâs connections also afforded Jovan the opportunity to travel on the road with artists like early 90âs R&B group The Boyz (Dial My Heart, Crazy), which introduced the impressionable youngster to the entertainment lifestyle.

As a teen, Jovan played drums in his high school marching band and performed in several music groups, including a gospel rap clique, Godâs Little Angels, in which he rapped, produced tracks and wrote hooks. Although the group would eventually disband, this experience would prepare him for things to come. As a solo artist Jovan experienced years of spending hard earned money at local overpriced studios and leaving with poor quality recordings. Jovan realized he needed to create his own environment to make music to meet his outstanding expectations of being a world wide star. In 2002, with a $5,000 loan from his father, Jovan moved into an empty warehouse space near downtown, purchased some wood, recording equipment and began construction on his own studio. Working with a limited budget he single-handedly built a bedroom and recording booth, and began working on his demo.

A few years later another connection through his father resulted in an opportunity for Jovan to travel overseas to record. âI ended up signing an international management deal and going over to Belgium to record. They had me doing stuff that just wasnât me.â While the trip didnât result in Jovanâs big break he believes it was a turning point in finding out who he was as an artist and his character as a man. The trip also resulted in Jovan penning his first breakout hit âFedExâ. âIt was a great opportunity but, I was so lonely over there. I was missing home and all the things Iâd taken for granted. As I was sitting in a café I noticed a FedEx truck passing by and I started writing on a napkin about how I wished I could FedEx myself home,â Jovan recalls. Upon returning stateside Jovan enlisted local producer Kevven âK-Hampâ Hamilton to produce the music for âFedExâ, and Anotha Dais Productions was established.

âFedExâ created a buzz and was released with six other songs as an EP. In May 2004, as Jovanâs name began to circulate around the Atlanta music scene, he entered a joint venture deal with independent label/marketing firm Cloud 9 Entertainment. Through Cloud 9, Jovan was able to work with established producers Ryan Leslie (Britney Spears, Beyonce, Cassie) and former Bad Boy producers Stevie J and J-Dub, who produced Jovanâs first official single, âNeed Youâ featuring former Bad Boy rapper Loon. Though the track sold a respectable number of copies, generating regional airplay, it did not lead to a major distribution deal and the companies parted ways.

While, Jovan would prefer to perform with his multifaceted 8-piece band, his musical material isnât restricted to the confines of the contemporary R&B genre. Jovanâs dual style was showcased perfectly on the groundbreaking mixtape entitled 24: Season One, hosted by DJ Don Cannon (Aphilliates). Cannon and DJ Sense immediately labeled Jovanâs innovative approach âRhythm and Streetsâ and he became the first R&B artist to put out a mix tape hosted by the Aphilliates. The mix tape segues between Jovanâs smooth vocals and his hip-hop driven altar ego boldly challenging the current state of R&B. âNo one is making real records anymore,â Jovan insists, âItâs a joke. People know it but no one is saying it.â 24: Season Two hit the streets early in 2007.

As 24: Season One made its rounds throughout the southern region, Jovanâs name began buzzing on everyoneâs radar including longtime friend DJ Toomp. Toomp recognized Jovanâs star quality and offered to shop him along with his label N Zone Entertainment for distribution. âToomp is more than a business partner, he is a mentor and a friend,â Jovan says of his relationship with the infamous ATL beat banger. Coincidentally Toompâs Sound Trap Studio is now housed in the very building that Jovan built a few years back, and is home to the offices of ZoneBoy Productions and N Zone Entertainment.

Jovan first received chart success with the Toomp-stamped hit single âGotta Get to My Babyâ which at its height, reached the 2 spot on the Billboard Hot Singles Sales Chart quickly surpassing many other artists with major label backing and much larger promotional budgets. The record achieved regional success and caught the eyes of many label executives positioning Jovan as an artist to watch.

In April 2007, Jovan was selected to go on the Seagram's Gin Live Tour with rap duo Clipse and R&B sensation Mya. The eleven city tour gave him the opportunity to garner national attention with dates in D.C, New York, and Miami. The tour was not only a pivotal point in Jovan's career but a springboard for the next level of opportunities awaiting him. While touring, Jovan began filming a documentary on his life as an independent artist on his first tour and the struggles of trying to make it in the music industry. The documentary, tentatively titled DAIS AWAY: JOVAN DAIS, guarantees a raw and un-cut version of the journey an artist takes to success in the entertainment business. While filming the documentary Jovan developed a passion for film editing and now adds film director to his repertoire of talent. In addition to Dais Ahead: The Jovan Dais Documentary, he has several other original Film and Television programs in the works including: Americaâs Next Great Songwriter and The Narrator (A Short Film and Soundtrack).

Having experienced the ups and downs of the industry, Jovan has developed a thick skin, in addition to evolving into an even more seasoned artist, performer and businessman. Equipped with a catalog of album-ready songs and an aggressive team in place; Jovan has taken control of his destiny with Anotha Dais Productions and is patiently waiting to take the industry by storm.

No Looking Back is an impressive urban gospel release, and easily one of the year's big comebacks in the genre

If one were to list the key artists who gave rise to urban gospel music in the last decade, most would probably list the usual suspects—Kirk Franklin, Mary Mary, Yolanda Adams. Another that deserves to be included in that bunch is Damita, even though her impressive self-titled major label debut failed to make as big of waves in the industry. Vocally, Damita is no Yolanda, but her first disc proved she was every bit as sassy, spirit-led, and self-assured. Her gifting is more delicate and understated—a quiet storm that could go from a fragile whisper to a thunderous, soaring soprano.

Perhaps Damita was too delicate and eclectic to catch on, but the singer is finally back with a follow-up. Eight years is a long time in-between projects, but the quality of No Turning Back renders the lapse irrelevant. You'd think Damita would be rusty or out of form after all this time, but that's far from the case here. Her voice is as potent as ever, commanding every track with the confidence of a leading lady, right on par with gospel sirens two years her senior.

Like the music of her husband, recording artists Deitrick Haddon, Damita favors the urban side of the gospel spectrum. She refrains from waxing churchy or melismatic, instead making a conscious effort to skew younger by remaining true to the music she loves, namely, uncomplicated yet extremely effective urban pop. Her style is melodic to the core—urban in approach but unabashedly pop, like a Christian version of Rihanna (except Damita could sing circles around her).

Amid the thumping beds and the top-rate production, the heart of Damita shines. She doesn't get lost in the hotness of the beats, letting instead her voice do the talking, no matter if she's tackling airy pop ("Great God"), calypso-flavored worship ("Best Thing"), Janet-styled urban jams ("Torn Up"), organic acoustic soul ("Midnite"), classic R&B ("Pray"), or a knockout, guitar-laced cover of a gospel hit ("I Won't Complain").

Since the title makes it seem like Damita has every intention to keep on making music, let's hope No Turning Back means the songstress won't be taking another extended hiatus, and that she's back for good.

If you were into deitrick haddon and his amazing tracks courtesy of Tim&Bob, then you wouldn't want to miss out on his wife. Damita's album is a really astonishing R&B Gospel album, Songs like "Torn Up" or even "Don't Leave Me Lonely" would leave you craving for more from this talented singer with a very bright future ahead. Props to Tim&Bob for their incredible work recently too. Grab it, nuff said.

As a producer, Nujabes has grown a lot in my opinion from 2003 to 2005 when he released the said product. Nujabes has always had a cool jazz influence over his beats, and thankfully that hasn't changed. The beats he crafted for this LP are all A Grade. The few emcees he chose to rap over some select gems aren't the best, but they flow over his tracks like they've worked with him since 89. From American underground artists like Cise Starr and Substantial to Japanese talent like Shing02 and Uyama Hiroto, each featured artist brings something special to the track to make it shine. It'd be hard for me to pick a few standout tracks because of the amazing job Nujabes does to weave all of the songs together. Without a doubt, I believe this is the best work Nujabes has done.

I know that not many people will get the chance to experience some these very impressive beats, and that's a shame. If Nujabes were to release some of his stuff in America and work with some of the artists who have a stable fanbase, there's no doubt in my mind that he'd be one of the premier producers this side of the western hemisphere. But maybe he's not doing it for the fame? Maybe he's just doing it to make good music. I don't know. Either way, I hope he doesn't make me wait too long for the next LP. Get this album however you can.

It is definitely a jazzy\smooth hip hop album that brings out various emotions in their music, do check this out. Do not sleep on this talented dj.

This fine debut album from Amsterdam based singer-songwriter Giovanca Ostiana has been a long time coming as the lady who also just happens to be an actress, fashion model and MTV presenter has been too busy! Still, it has been well worth the wait. Around since March in Europe this is a stunning debut of fresh, feel good soulful and jazzy tunes.

Produced by blue-eyed soul boy Benny Sings and released on the strong dutch independent Dox record label the whole album is full of tunes that have huge hit potential if it wasn't for the fact that they ooze class out of every note. On the slow and instantly catchy ballad 'Melancholic You' Giovanca sounds very much like Minnie Ripperton in both voice, phrasing and production and to prove that this is not a fluke the fullness of her voice becomes even more like Ripperton in the following track the delightful 'Pure Bliss'.

The ability to create songs of this quality which also have the knack of being instantly memorable is extremely rare and is enhanced by the new beats and samples of producer Benny Sings. The uptempo tracks are just as good. There is funk in 'You can do it'; latin in 'Free,' RnB in 'Stay Together' and soul in 'Matter of fact'

Yet know matter what the genre it is all linked together by the ability to structure tunes that have a lasting melody that will continue to linger in your head for many days after playing them. There may be contradictions in some of the lyrical content of the songs but there is absolutely no contradictions to be heard in the music. It's just sophisticated soul at it's most eclectic.

By far one of the finest soul albums out this year, grab it!

A member of the tight-knit Mobb Deep family, Big Noyd has been a Queensbridge legend since his opening line on the Mobb's song "Give Up The Goods (Just Step)". First getting shine way back in 1993 on Mobb Deep's debut album "Juvenile Hell", Noyd continued to make show stopping appearances on nearly every following Mobb Deep album. His 1996 debut album, "Episodes of a Hustler", was released during a period of incarceration for the infamous Big Noyd. Nevertheless, many consider it a classic. The four singers, a gruff-voiced version of Boyz II Men, are primarily concerned with "sexing" somebody in most of the slow-jam songs, in a variety of ways, both physical and social. In "Tell Me How Ya Like It," they are soliciting comment on "the way I grab it from the back, " while "In the Rain" pleads, "Let's go and make love outside in the rain." When they aren't talking about the specific circumstances of the act, the singers are encountering situational problems. "1, 2, 3," their debut single, concerns a romantic triangle in which a man can't make up his mind between two women. And "Sexin' Your Ex" must be the first song about lusting after your former wife. But it probably isn't the subject matter that earns this album its "parental advisory" sticker. While the group itself sticks to harmonizing and wailing, several of the songs are accompanied by often vituperative raps by guest rappers, such as the obscenity-laden one by Simone Starks in "Sexin' Your Ex" that uses racial and homophobic epithets to bluntly inform the singers that their intentions are doomed to failure. Though raps are a convention of even conventional R&B these days, the tone of the ones here seems extreme in contrast to the sentiments of the song lyrics. Executive producer LL Cool J, who is debuting his Warner Bros. production deal and his Rock the Bells (RTB) label with this release, may find the two aspects complementary, and they can be, but sometimes they disrupt the mood. If these lover boys really want to sex their listeners, maybe they should leave their rap friends back in the crib.

I had the pleasure to hear the whole kiley Dean album and I must say that she is a power house with her vocals.Song like "escape" written and produced by Timberland show a diverse side to the music style of Kiley captivating her raspy voice, also my favorite song on the album called "Days Gone By" which could have been an instant #1 on the charts with its slow R&B flavor as well as "America" that was another Timberland classic. All 19 tracks that I heard and sadly have to burn to have for myself showcase the best that Kiley has, unfortunatly her album was stopped which was a major major major mistake and I pray that they let this girl release more of her music to show that she's got MADD SOUL, (you would think she's black if you didn't know what she look like)

This feline is back, and she is ready to capture the attention of those who doubted her return. Jaguar Wright is probably best known for her background vocals on Jay-Z's MTV Unplugged album but she also put out an album entitled Denials, Delusions, and Decisions back in 2002. But with a pending pregnancy (which she happily showcased in her video for the song "What If"), this gritty songstress found herself being looked over and under-promoted by her then label MCA Records. Now having suffered a shelved album entitled And Your Point Is in 2003, Jaguar resurfaces on Artemis Records with the aptly titled Divorcing Neo 2 Marry Soul.

The title is fitting considering Jaguar eagerly breaks the mold of just sounding "new" and different from everything else that is out. You can practically say that she is at times possessed with the sound of old school soul we all grew up with. "Woman To Woman" is a modern twist to Shirley Brown's classic song on dealing with an outsider trying to creep in on her territory...namely her man. But besides remaking a classic, Jaguar dives into a near 12-minute escapade on "Do Your Worst", reminiscent of those 12" singles that some of us might remember from the days of old.

She, like many other artists, gives a vocal tribute to her seed on the song "Flower." Those of you that loved her debut album will appreciate songs like "My Place," "Let Me Be The One," and "One More Drink" (the latter being a spillover track from her unreleased album mentioned earlier.) Her hip-hop influence is demonstrated on the track "Timing," where she uses the same beat from Clipse's "Grindin," and "Been Here Before" provides some of here potty-mouth antics that we became accustom to on Denials, Delusions, and Decisions. Even the first single "Free" is refreshing in that Jaguar isn't scared tell it like it is. One thing is for sure, Divorcing Neo 2 Marry Soul is proof that Jaguar's ready to move on to bigger and better things.

George Duke's debut for Heads Up International, "Dukey Treats," will be out on store shelves on Tuesday, Aug. 26. The album cover features chocolate miniatures, including a piano. It's so Ghiardelli Square. The veteran keyboardist/composer is offering up 12 treats, er tracks, on this release. Bassists Christian McBride and Byron Miller, percussionist Sheila E, drummer Leon "Ndugu" Chancler, guitarist Jef Lee Johnson (late Grover Washington, Jr. sideman) and trumpeter Michael "Patches" Stewart are three of the top-line guest stars on the album. The vocalists on the CD are an incredible array of talent, ranging from Rachelle Farrell to Howard Hewett, Teena Marie to Jonathan Butler to Josie James, Lynn Davis and Napoleon "Napi" Brock.
The opening track is a high-energy number called "Everyday Hero." "A Fonk Tail" pays homage to the Parliament/Funkadelic era of the 1970s. "Creepin'" is a remake of a song that originally appeared on Duke's 2002 BPM release "Face The Music." Duke's top keyboard solo, in my opinion, is on the closing track, "Images Of Us." As usual, it sounds like another winner from George Duke, the venerable master of piano-driven funk.

Finesoul ~ In my opinion i tought this was going to be another typical Funk/R&B Album but it sounds dope to say the least. Tracks like "I Tried To Tell You" & "Somebody Laid It On Us" reminiscence the old isley brothers songs. This is something worth checking out even if you think the cover paints a different picture. Last words... Grab it!

Omarian's baby brother made a tight album. I like almost every song on this album. He has some nice mid tempo songs. He sings them well. I dont care for the songs smellz like a party, or shorty. My personal favorites are called Going Out Your Way which reminds me of south side by loyd and I like the song I'm Coming which a smooth song. Too bad many people dont know about this great cd.

Governor is the newest R&B crooner to be signed to a rapper's label. But unlike Bobby Valentino who favors romance & seduction, Governor has more in common in with Donny Hathway & Lyfe Jennings. I was initially disappointed by the CD because it lacks those baby maker slow jams but after giving the CD a second listen I found the CD to be more social & political than sexual. Governor is at his best on Blood, Sweat & Tears, Slow Down & Forgive Me but the rest of the CD is by the numbers. T.I. is wasted on his featured track, but Governor does show some promise. Instinct tells me that Grand Hustle Records another male R&B crooner Rashad Morgan also known as Ray-Ray is going to be the label's lover man while Governor will be the exact opposite.
This album is certainly different from other slow jam albums in the market, theres no harm sparing another 80mb in your porn filled hd =].

Keisha White is the real deal Holyfield. Representing North London, the young soul siren embodies that 'it' factor that every artist wishes they possessed. She's got the chops, she's got the looks, and she's got the versatility. But being a world away will limit her exposure to the listening audience in the United States. Nevertheless, Keisha White has the sophistication for the older crowd along with the power ballads that the 'American Idol' audience seems to enjoy hearing week in and week out on the show. And her debut album Out of My Hands is certainly one of those albums that the critics will love and embrace after one listen.

"The Weakness In Me" is a superb illustration of the vocal gift that Keisha personifies in every note she exclaims in her songs (see link to the video below). Other compelling melodies include "I Choose Life" and "It Takes A Stronger Man." But Keisha White also explores the delicate and smooth side of R&B with songs like "One Step At A Time," "Love Is The Deepest Hurt," and "Why." She even does a few mid-tempo tracks like the funky "Brother," the title track "Out Of My Hands," the unrelenting "What's On Your Mind" and the cover of the Patti Austin/James Ingram classic "Baby Come To Me." Even the upbeat riff of "Complicated Emotions" doesn't sound out of place despite it being the only cut on the album that comes close to a dance track.

A lot of people will try to draw comparisons to people like Toni Braxton, Joss Stone, or Heather Headley. But Keisha White is truly a starlet in her own right. Her gracefulness alone sets her far apart from the pack. And even though Out of My Hands is an import disc, the few extra bucks to get your hands on it will be worth every penny once you play it for the first time in your stereo.

Imagine a cross between Craig David and Usher and you will find Nathan. The album is pretty much full of potential singles and although "Masterpiece" is the kind of title asking for criticism from the get go, its a justified title. The album is very strong, personal favourites include "Cold as Ice" and "Kiss Me" - well worth a buy!

N2U is the product of Chris Stokes, who rose to fame with his groups IMX, B2K, and the female counterparts Gyrl and TG4. Whereas all those other groups focused entirely on their labelmates, along with dance cuts and sappy ballads, N2U strays away from the format; the result is a wonderful album that cannot be missed.

All of the songs are definitely worth listening to. This is one of those rare albums that you can play all the way through without skipping any. This album isn't for dance fanatics, for this is a very ballad-heavy album, but that's definitely not detrimental to it. This album simply WORKS.

Anytime you start off with an excellent intro, you know you have a soild album, and N2U does just that. "Because of You" is an excellent vocal masterpiece, with lovely vocals and excellent backdrop instrumentals. "Freakin' You (Set the Mood)" is excellent and has a lovely lead vocal with some serious backgrounds, with some good lyrics. By far my favorite two songs on the album.

What also makes this album work is the various subject matter. It's not all about "ooh baby, I love you forever", but N2U deals with some issues that go on in everyday life. "Baby Mama Love" is relatable to a lot of men, and the song works because it's nowhere near overdone vocally, production-wise, or lyrically. It sounds like it's read straight from someone's journal or thoughts. Interesting. Also, "Breakin' the Law" is a sexy song that tells you what a man is going to do to his lady, but not in a raunchy "et me lick you way", but also not having any cares about the act's surroundings. A lovely song at best! "Beauty" tells you how many people go to someone's looks to keep the relationship knowing that it can't keep it going. And the song is, again, not overdone at all. And of course, the hidden track "What Goes Around Comes Around" teaches us the old adage of karma. Beautiful.

Why 4.75 stars? First, because "Because of You" had the perfect potential to be a whole song and it was just an interlude. When it went off, I was like, no!!! I would have loved to hear a whole song of that. Also, Jermaine Dupri is the only guest star on this album and even he was unnecessary. N2U could have done this album without anyone! lol

All in all, this album is one of those rare finds that you have to have. It's such a shame that it's underpromoted and overlooked, for it is definitely a classic. It's funny that N2U shines where the other groups under Stokes has failed -- in the vocals -- yet doesn't get the recognition they deserve. Here's hoping that we get some more N2U played!

The multi-talented Nick Cannon first became known as an actor in films and TV, appearing in DRUMLINE, LOVE DON'T COST A THING, and even his own NICK CANNON SHOW. Somehow, in between acting jobs, he found the time to record a hip-hop album. Despite his camera-friendly image, Cannon clearly has aspirations to be more than just another Will Smith nice-guy rapper. Things get off to a roaring start with the in-your-face track "Get Crunk Shorty" pumping things up (with help from Ying Yang Twins). Throughout the album, Cannon takes a surprisingly hard lyrical stance, frequently proclaiming himself a "gigolo" and a "pimp." On the naggingly catchy "You," Cannon shows his musical roots by making lyrical references to the Grandmaster Flash/Furious Five classic "The Message" and De La Soul's "Me, Myself & I," but doesn't go down the socio-political road of those songs. Naturally, being a film and TV star, Cannon lined up guest-shots aplenty for his debut, including star turns by Mary J. Blige and R. Kelly, but, to his credit, these icons do not outshine him.

Latif's debut album "Love In The First" is probably one of the most slept on releases of 2003. His first single "I Don't Wanna Hurt You" tells a story about young love and the scary thought of settling down at a young age. The script flips a bit to the next song "Who's Lovin' Her Now" its kinda like the 2nd part to the 1st single he wonders if shes happy and who is loving her.
The highlights on the disc is definately track 4 "Without U" a beautiful interpretation of how much u realise how much some means to you when they're gone. Also track 11 stands out for me which could have easily been a single "Rain Will Go Away" its such a heart breaking song "Rain will go away/i pray you find someone else to take my place".
Latif has so much talent comparisons to Avant & Donell Jones are clearly evident let's hope he releases a sophomore CD

For a while there, the helium-voiced Macy Gray seemed to be coasting instead of crashing down the walls between funk, rock, and R&B the way scads of breathless music pundits once said she would. That was before will.i.am and a handful of other skillful knob-twisters entered her life. Now, multi-genre destruction and utter domination once again seem possible: Big, as its title suggests, is a huge record--bold in all the right places and subdued where it needs to be; scruffy around the edges but slick below the surface; at once nonchalant and reckless to the bone. Gray, in her way, is a vocal Timbaland--it's tempting to think she's too imposing to make a random-seeming hook-up work, but she stretches her singular gift around pretty much any collaborator a producer can throw at her, and with style to burn. On Big, those tossed on for the challenge include Natalie Cole, who lights up opener "Finally Made Me Happy"; Nas, who gives up the grit likably on "Ghetto Love"; and Fergie, who coos efficiently throughout "Glad You're Here." As vibes go, the one given off here is cool, casual, and slightly crazy--all Macy, in other words. She does her thing up right, and she does it Big.

And with each new James Brown record that I heard on WWRL-1600 AM, I would jump up and spin around imagining that I was on the stage of the Apollo Theatre, just like James Brown. Then I would run down to the record store and plunk down my hard earned 49 cents and buy my very own vinyl copy of that new James Brown record. And all was right with my world, until two weeks later, when WWRL-1600 AM would play yet another brand new James Brown record and the process would repeat itself!"

"50th Anniversary Collection" gives those songs to you, EXACTLY as they were first presented to us on the radio (without the static....lol) and it's presented in chronological order. 50 hit records over the course of 50 years. There are no "alternate takes", "extended jams", "stuff recorded when nobody knew that the tape recorder was still running", live cuts, etc.

The streets have a time-tested way of putting the cold hard steel to a soul. The streets toughen folks to either stay and survive, or to elevate and strive. Frankenstein had a white label album “Live From New York Remix Album” back in 97′. Some of his remixes for artists (unofficial remixes) are so dope that cats should have been checkin’ for his production skills back then instead of messing with some of the crap that was out there.

I’m not sure what it is about Frank’s sound that is so appealing to me, but he definitely has a “sound” to his beats that are very compelling to me. I first heard him on a Salt Lake City hip hop radio show when they played “The Rain Is Gone” back in 98′. Immediately I was fiendin’ for this track. Luckily enough I had the tape deck recording that night and that tape became a prized possession.

This is a great EP. Georgia is seriously multi-talented and she has such an evident amount of self-confidence that comes through in her music. It would have been very easy for Georgia to get pigeon-holed as an R&B singer by some wack A&R, but enter Stones Throw to give her the green light she so deserves. This EP is different than anything I've heard in a while and Georgia made the beats and sang on every track.

Vivian Green is old-school R&B: she can actually sing, and her songs actually say something. It's not just over-produced bump-n-grind nonsense that so many other female performers these days excel at. She's a vocalist, not just some MTV/BET video hoe upgraded to singer.

This album consists of songs that are atypical of R&B these days also. They don't depend on driving choruses, or thumping bass. They just depend on her voice, and the words she's singing. And they WORK. Instead of giving us an album consisting of a few singles and some filler, we get a solid block of material that holds up and doesn't become old or faded. Long after you stop playing your current album-of-the-minute with the big hits on it that get inevitably replaced by bigger hits on another day, you can keep right on playing this one.

My one complaint (and the reason it's four stars and not five) is that the album isn't as good as her first one. That one really consisted of songs that fit her voice perfectly and had much stronger, more poignant writing overall. It was more soulful than this one, and emotionally heavier. This one is excellent, but it's very light compared to her debut.

And hey, there's nothing wrong with that. She's obviously able to stretch and be flexible. And if that means that every album she puts out will maintain her high quality and yet be different from the last, that's really exciting. Not many artists can make that kind of promise, but when Vivian does, you can trust her, and trust in her music. This CD is definitely a keeper.

Dave Chapelle thinks so, too, so he threw just such a party in the summer of 2005--in the Clinton Hill neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY--and invited not only his friends but a whole bunch of people he didn't know. A self-professed hip-hop head, Chapelle asked some of the finest and most respected artists in the game--including the Roots, Black Star, Jill Scott, and Common--to provide the music for his little soiree.

There's very little thug or hardcore posturing present on any of these tracks (or in the film version of the Party directed by Michel Gondry). Instead, the hip-hop here is socially conscious, groove-oriented, and reflective of the old-school virtues of the hip-hop community. Jill Scott and Erykah Badu bring a taste of sharp-edged R&B to the proceedings, while Talib Kweli, Common, Mos Def, and Dead Prez keep the raps fluid and consistent throughout this dynamic, good-times throwback of a set.

While most artists out there portray an illusionary image from street thugs to dealing drugs, Shogunna paints a real picture of what he is and what he lives. Being caught up in the street life at a young age, all the surrounding experiences have befallen on Shogunna like a trial of tests. Scarface take us back to the fifth ward and also returns to rap a lot on his latest release MADE. Made is the usual formula that has made scarface a classic artist. 10 solid songs accompanied by an intro and outro. Scarface is the best when he is telling a gritty story in his rhymes, expressing his love for his religion, and just some downright gangster lyrics. Along with some solid beats this album is a winner. Scarface has been around since 86' so his consistency in making music is amazing. This album gets big support from me and is highly recommended.

Carnage is a so-so release from Chaundon. I think the braggadocios rhymes are cool, but they'd probably sound better coming from someone more believable. It's not a bad album, but there was nothing on it that "wowed" me. I'd have to say it doesn't separate Chaundon from the rest of the pack either. You might love it right away, but after the new album buzz wears off, I can't imagine anyone reaching for this. I'd recommend giving this a listen before you actually pay for it.

The first thing that jumps out about this album is the fact that Supastition finally has production that will do his unique flow justice. Supa takes his listeners on a journey through everyday life with lyrics that are heartfelt and earnest. Whether he's asking his ex-girlfriend to take him back or recounting his journey to get signed you'll feel like you're standing right there with him through it all. With help from beatsmiths like Illmind, Nicolay, Jake One, Madwreck, and M-Phazes, the production has more meat for Supa to sink his teeth into this time around. Sometimes, every now and then a artist or a group will come out and their release is hyped up and then you get the CD and its mediocre or nothing that you expected it to be. Lucy Pearl, which is composed of, Raphael Saadiq, from Tony!Toni!Tone!fame, Dawn Robinson, from En Vogue fame, and Ali Shaheed Muhammad, from A Tribe Called Quest fame. Now if that's not a supergroup, then let me know what is. The debut CD from Lucy Pearl lives up to all expectations and then some. The music appeal is comparable to what a 2000 Tony!Toni!Tone! CD might have been. With Raphael Saadiq and Ali Shaheed Muhammad sharing most of the production duties, you'll be bouncing like "Check The Rhime", "Electric Relaxation" and "Award Tour" had you bouncing in A Tribe Called Quest's heyday. Most of the tracks on Lucy Pearl's CD are dance tracks, but that doesn't hurt anything. Raphael's and Dawn's vocals blend like they have been together in the same group for years. The best example of this, is the 1st single, that was also on the "Love And Basketball" soundtrack, "Dance Tonight". There are other gems as well: "Trippin'", "Can't Stand Your Mother", "Good Love", "La La", etc. The year 2000 has already had a few tight R&B CDs so far: D'Angelo, Amel Larrieux, Joe, Carl Thomas, Dwayne Wiggins, as well as, Ms. Braxton herself, but the vibe that Lucy Pearl has created will be hard to stop for many years to come. I haven't seen a combination this good since chicken and mambo sauce.

Between the Sheets is a 1983 album released by The Isley Brothers on their T-Neck imprint. Yielding the top ten singles, "Between the Sheets" and "Choosey Lover" including the radio hits "Let's Make Love Tonight" and "Ballad for the Fallen Soldier", the album gave the Isleys another platinum record. It was a series of lasts for the group: it was the last album to be released under the T-Neck name, the last album the group recorded for Epic, and the last time the 3 + 3 lineup recorded together. By the end of the year, younger brothers Ernie, Marvin and Chris Jasper left the group to form Isley-Jasper-Isley while Ronald, O'Kelly and Rudolph continued on as a trio. "Between the Sheets" has become a heavily sampled R&B classic as is "Choosey Lover", which was re-recorded by Aaliyah for her 1996 album, One In a Million & by Cleavland rap group Bone Thugs-n-Harmony for "Buddah Lovaz"

After scoring their first number one album, The Heat Is On, The Isley Brothers' followed that classic up less than a year later with 1976's amazing Harvest For The World. The band has always had something to say and never have they said more than on the amazing title track. A call for understanding and unity, the song has more relevance today than it did twenty-five years ago. The album is worth it for that song alone, but the rest of the album stands up as well with "People Of Today", "Let Me Down Easy" and "At Your Best (You Are Love)" standing out. The album peaked at number nine on the charts.

Meet the nu-soul--same as the old soul? Well, Dwele's debut certainly contains similarities to old-school artists such as Donny Hathaway and of course Stevie Wonder--all the evidence you need to connect the dots is here in the shimmering Fender Rhodes piano that predominates on SUBJECT.

But Dwele is made of more contemporary stuff. He's a rapper who's found his singing voice, though the only time his hip-hop roots really show is in the tumbling lyrics to the coming-of-age song "Twuneanunda" and the title track. Mostly he's a smoothly sophisticated singer with a canny sense of what works in an arrangement, and while he obviously has deep ties to what is now ancient R&B history, his sound is undeniably modern, and irresistibly seductive. Most of the cuts on SUBJECT are down-tempo, though the incidence of satin sheet-oriented boudoir ballads is kept to a surprising minimum. He's a more thoughtful lyricist than that, as evidenced by the nuanced, humorous "Lady at Mahogany," about a tryst gone awry, in which he shows he's not averse to telling tales on himself. SUBJECT is both light enough in feel and accomplished enough in execution to leave you hungry for more.

This is one of the more musical hip hop albums out there; production by the legendary Jay Dee makes this an awesome aural experience. Throughout almost every song, there is a tasty groove, making this something you'll want to listen to all the way through. But the rhymes failed to inspire me. First off, there is nothing new here content wise, the same old egotistical BS, money, objectifying women, the whole standard regiment of material. Being a hip hop fan, I can look past this and consider other things, like rhythm, flow, all that stuff. Slum Village failed me on this as well. None of the members are particularly standout rappers, which really hurts the album. Still, the beats are SO good that Fantastic Vol. II is still worth picking up despite this rather major shortcoming. I mean, these beats are extremely good, some of the best I've ever heard in hip hop. To hear the combination of ultra sweet beats and quality rapping, make sure to get Common - "Like Water For Chocolate." Best rap album ever, no question.
